CVGist generates tailored resumes by learning from your background and adapting it to specific job postings. Here's how it works.

The CVGist Workflow

Step 1: Create Your Base Profile

Screenshot: Upload base profile dialog

Your base profile is the foundation. Upload any of these:

  • Existing resume (PDF or DOCX)
  • LinkedIn profile export
  • Plain text with your background

CVGist parses your profile and uses it as AI context for all resume generation. This means you only upload once.

How to upload:

  1. Click "Create Base Profile" in the dashboard
  2. Choose your file or paste text
  3. Wait for parsing to complete (5-10 seconds)

Once uploaded, you'll see it in the top-left section labeled "Base Profile" with an AI Context Active badge.

Step 2: Generate a Base Resume (Optional)

Before tailoring to specific jobs, you can generate a base resume from your profile:

  1. Click the sparkle icon (✨) next to your base profile
  2. Choose from 93 professional templates
  3. CVGist generates a polished resume from your profile data

This step is optional but recommended to see how CVGist interprets your background.

Step 3: Add Job Targets

A job target is a specific position you're applying for. For each job:

  1. Click "+ Add Job" in the Job Targets section
  2. Paste the job posting URL or description
  3. Add the company name and job title
  4. Click "Add Job"

The job appears in your targets list with a "Generating..." status.

Step 4: View Your Tailored Resume

CVGist automatically generates a resume tailored to the job posting:

  • Overview section emphasizes relevant experience
  • Work history highlights applicable skills
  • Skills section matches job requirements
  • Format is clean and ATS-friendly

Click any job target to view its resume in the Workbench (right panel).

Step 5: Edit and Download

In the Workbench, you can:

  • Edit manually: Click any section to make changes
  • AI Edit: Ask CVGist to refine specific sections
  • Download: Export as PDF or DOCX
  • Choose template: Switch between 93 professional designs

Tips

  • Update your base profile whenever your background changes - all future resumes will use the updated context
  • Add multiple job targets at once - CVGist generates them in parallel
  • Use AI Edit to quickly adjust tone, add keywords, or emphasize specific experience
  • Save multiple versions by duplicating job targets before making experimental edits
